Make Your Own Fantasy Football Cheatsheet

The purpose of your fantasy football cheatsheet is to tell you which players to select during your draft day. Fantasy football cheat sheets are created by various magazines and many online services. These fantasy football cheat sheets provide a compiled list of player rankings in a single table for several positions.

The problem with holding tight to a magazine or website fantasy football cheatsheet is that the conditions of players in the real world changes, but these cheatsheets don't. However, they offer a starting point for your own cheatsheet.

Here's the basics building your own fantasy football cheatsheet.

Step 1 - Join A Fantasy Football League

Watching your favorite NFL football team on Sunday, have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the owner of your own NFL football team? Playing fantasy football allows you that opportunity and it is easy to do. As a fantasy team owner you control who your players are and when they play.

There is no sense in having a fantasy football cheatsheet unless you plan on playing in a league. So the first step you need to take when playing fantasy football is joining a league. This can be done at various websites and registration is free. You also may be invited to join an online or offline league.Once you have joined the league you will need to give your team a name to identify yourself from the rest of the fantasy owners within your league.

Step 2 - Understand Your League's Scoring System

Its important to understand the nuances of your league's scoring system.  It helps you understand what plays are assigned points.  Your league may have a different scoring system than another league, so don't assume that they are the same. Your running backs may only score when the get a touchdown, but don't get any points for yards run.

You also need to understand the league rules and how many of each postition you are allowed on your roster. A typical fantasy football team consists of 1 quarterback, 2 running backs, 2 or 3 wide receivers, 1 tight end, 1 kicker, and 1 defense/special teams. The league player draft is where you will choose which players will be on your team. After the draft you will have your team roster set.

However, don't make a noobie mistake and ignore your own league's rules. You may have a different combination of players to that that described above. All of this plays into building your fantasy football cheatsheet.

Step 3 - Build Teired Rankings for Players

Ask your league commissioner for the last 3 years statistics for players. This typically shows the player name, position, points awarded and maybe auction value. Now take those values and input them into a spreadsheet creating a spreadsheet for every position and every year.

I use MS Excel, but there are other options. Once you have them in the spreadsheet you can see the points breakout into tiers. David Dorey from The Huddle has a great article on "How to Tier Players". Check that out for a good example of tiered players.

In the end you will have to evaluate each position over the past 3 years to get to a pre-draft day fantasy football cheatsheet.  You may reposition one quarterback over another because of injuries or changes in the team coaching staff.

Step 4 - Update Your Cheatsheet Before Draft Day

Review your fantasy football cheatsheet 2 weeks, 3 days and the night before your league's draft. Your players may need to shift again due to more injuries or changes in their real live team rosters. Don't make a noobie error and go in with the cheatsheet you created 6 weeks earlier.

If you do these steps you will be heads above 95% of the other players in your league. Your chances for have a strong draft day are excellent. Oh, one more thing. Don't go sharing your fantasy football cheatsheet with all your buddies before the draft. You are working hard to win and don't give it all away bragging or arguing over beers!
